A LAND OF CONTRASTS
Zones: Atlantic | Mountain | Atlantic-mediterranean | Mediterranean
It is found in the south of the Basque Country, that is to say the Rioja
region of Alava and the Ribera Navarra region of the Ebro. In the southern
third the wide spaces characteristic of a flat and open topography are interspersed
with the various mountain ranges, with its vegetation corresponding to the
Mediterranean climate.
The annual average temperature varies between 13 and 14º, similar to
the coast but with a wider temperature range (17-18º), symptom of a larger
continentalization. In summer the temperatures are high, above 30º. In
winter, the average minimum temperature is around 2º.
The precipitation level goes down significantly compared to the Cantabrian
slope, ranging between 600 and 1000 mm, levels that are only surpassed in some
mountain ranges. As we head south, one can see a mild summer drought.
