A LAND OF CONTRASTS
Zones: Atlantic | Mountain | Atlantic-mediterranean | Mediterranean
It consists of the central part of the Basque Country, from the mountains
of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean divide to a line situated south that would
go from the mountain range of Cantabria in Alava to the mountain range of Leire
in Navarre. In the middle zone, we find a flatter and more open topography,
being more mountainous and woody in the northern zone, and flat and dry in
the southern zone.
The summer temperatures rise as we head south and east. In Vitoria-Gasteiz
the maximum average temperature in August is 25º and in Pamplona-Iruña
it is 27º. In winter, on the other hand, the temperatures go down notably.
In Vitoria-Gasteiz the average minimum temperature is 0.8º.
Precipitations go down significantly compared to the Cantabrian slope.
As we head south, one can observe a mild summer drought.
