Founded on the hill of Gasteiz by the Navarre King Sancho VI the Wise, the present-day Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital of the Basque Autonomous Community. It is a charming city that combines a magnificent historic past with the advantages of a modern and rational city. In fact, there are many parks and green spaces that make Vitoria the ideal city for walking and relaxation.
Places of interest
The Old City Quarter
Located on the hill of Gasteiz, the ancient knoll from which it was easier to
defend the city, we find the medieval section of Vitoria-Gasteiz, which has
been declared a national landmark for its collection of historical buildings.
Cathedral of Saint Mary
Constructed in the final years of the 18th Century, the Cathedral of
Saint Mary was a church-fortress inseparably attached to the defence
area of the ancient town. It was a collegiate church from 1496 until
1861, when it achieved the classification of cathedral.
Currently subject to a process of rehabilitation, one can visit the restoration
of the cathedral and check on the progress of the reconstruction and archaeological
excavation.
