Fiestas of San Pedro in Laguardia (Álava)

From June 23 rd to 29 th , Laguardia abandons its normal routine to welcome its local fiestas. It is then when hundreds cram into its streets, bars, and taverns and Laguardia becomes a hotbed of people.

In Laguardia traditions occupy an important place. In the early afternoon of that June 23 rd , a strange retinue of dancers, with the harlequin figure known as Cachimorro as their leader, proceed in search of the Mayor and the Town Attorney, who they then lead to the Town Square . Once there they lower the flag from the balcony to the street, where one of the Town Hall's employees collects it to present to the Town Attorney.

The retinue then proceeds toward the Church of San Juan . There they present the town's flag to Our Lady of Pilar and the Patron Saint with the traditional ceremony of the waving of the flag. This act of respect and homage is carried out by the Town Attorney, who first extends the flag on the floor of the church at the feet of the Virgin. He then takes it in his hand, and to the rhythm of a typical march composed centuries ago especially for this ceremony, he waves it, folds and unfolds it in skilled twists and turns, and ends by presenting it totally unfolded on the floor, kneeling, and praying a Salve Regina or a Credo. He then repeats this ceremony at the main altar, before the image of Saint John the Baptist.

Aside from this ancestral tradition, the greatest attraction of the Fiestas of San Juan are the bullfights that are fought in the bullring in the afternoons.

The entire fiestas are accompanied from street to street by the beat of the Fanfarre , a local marching band, and by the typical zurracapote, a popular mixed drink of wine, sugar, lemon, and cinnamon made by the town residents to treat their guests, friends, and family members. The festivities end on June 29 th with the traditional burial of the wine cask and the clamour of the final firecrackers.
