The day of the “Zorra” (or Fox) in Mendigorría ( Navarre ) |
|
On 7th December of each year, the Navarre town of Mendigorría relives the “Day of the Zorra", a celebration which aims to recover the ancient tradition in which the men of the village visited all the bars to try the different wines. In order to frighten off the women, the men said that there was a fox roaming the streets on that day. In reality the "zorra", or Fox, really referred to the drunken state in which they ended up. This custom has now evolved and today it is the women who control this festival: they make “tostadas”or toast, organise tasting sessions of the traditional “txistorra” and give out hot chestnuts to all who come to visit. Also, you can wander around and see many different arts and crafts on display. he tradition of the “día de la zorra” is not surprising in a village like Mendigorría, which has always been very much linked to wine production. In fact, this is one of the very few festivals dedicated to wine in Navarre , making it even more important still. |
