MONUMENT
El Peine del Viento (Donostia)

For Eduardo Chillida, the sculptures are placed in harmony with their surroundings, obtaining a certain meaning depending on the scenery around them. A clear example of this fact is his favourite piece of work, “el Peine del Viento” (The wind’s comb) in San Sebastian, where the artist fulfils one of his dreams, combining the scenery of his childhood with his work of art.

Located at the end of the San Sebastian beach of Ondarreta, opposite the Igueldo Mountain, in an area of utter beauty and which has been beaten by the sea and winds of the Cantabrian Sea, the Basque genius sculptor conveyed a true picture, made up of three pieces of art, each greater than ten tonnes and which required the use of a railed bridge to install them.

At the beginning, the artist presented the work as a huge musical instrument, whereby the sea would force it to produce musical notes by means of a complicated mechanism. Sadly, the mechanism could not resist the battering of the sea, although on the days in which the Cantabrian Sea shows off all its strength, if you listen carefully, it is still possible to hear some of its notes.

Today, the work of art has become an unavoidable referent for any visitor who comes to this beautiful city: you can start your tour of the city at this very spot, with a lovely walk along the Concha beach, overlooked by the island of Santa Clara.
