The Sangüesa festival, in honour of Saint Sebastian, is well known throughout the whole of the Navarre Community. It is held from the 11th to 17th September and celebrates the patron Saint of this beautiful area in the Middle Navarre.

The festival starts after the launching of the “chupinazo” (a large firework rocket), marking the start of the fiestas. Later, the Town Council meets at 5pm at the Eve Mass in the San Salvador Church, where the Nora Choir performs the traditional Salve Virgen Pura of the Rosaries of Sangüesa.

Every morning sees the running of the bulls to the bull ring, and in the afternoon there are bullfights for the keen enthusiasts.

The procession with the Saint is on the 12th and runs solemnly through the streets, accompanied by giant figures and characters, pipers, txistularis (Basque flute players) and joteros, dantzaris (traditional dancers) and the fabulous Municipal Musical Band, which in 1996 celebrated its first centenary. Everyday, at midday, the dance of the giants offers a colourful and lively show to the sound of the pipers,.

At night, we can witness one of the most entertaining and traditional moments of the festival: la "Subidica y Bajadica del Prau" (the climb and descent of the Prau). At midnight the Municipal Band starts its walk playing a bullfighter’s pasodoble and climbing up from the Town Hall to the Plaza del Prado. They are accompanied by a multitude of young people, constantly dancing and jumping. The popular dance with the band and pipers ends with the typical dance the "Jota Vieja" and at approximately half past one in the morning we start the "La Bajadica" or descent, which involves going back along the way we came. Here the crowds of people dance, jump in the air, raise their hands, shout out loud and try to make the procession last as long as they can.
