| Two
kilometres from Elorrio, in the heart of the Duranguesado area, we come
across a truly unique spot, full of mystery. This is the ancient Argiñeta
Necropolis, set in the middle of a shady beech forest which filters in
the light, creating a special sensation of peace and calm.
There is a set of sandstone tombs, surrounded by a stone wall, just opposite
the San Adrián Chapel. Inside we can admire 5 Pre Christian discoid
stellas as well as 23 tombs (one of them double), some of them with their
top stone, with Latin inscriptions that date back to the 9th Century.
It appears that they are the tombs of some noble Visigoths who arrived
wounded after a battle, fleeing from the Arabs.
The area around the chapel offers some magnificent views over the town
of Elorrio. Likewise, if we feel tired after the excursion, there is a
fountain and some benches, where you can rest for a while, recover and
admire the beautiful scenery..
