MONUMENT
Pamplona Cathedral (Navarre)

Pamplona Cathedral was begun by Carlos el Noble in 1397 and built over a Romanesque building, which dated back earlier than the 12th century and which was in ruins. The Cathedral is a wonderful Gothic temple made up of three naves with chapels along its sides, its ground plan and elevation in the form of a cross are quite pronounced, a polygonal presbytery and a peculiar ambulatory with pentagonal and hexagonal stretches.
The interior is quite harmonic and very stylish, with exquisite 16th century stain glass windows and its main altar, dominated by the Virgen del Sagrario, which was the figure before which the Kings of Navarre took their oath of allegiance.

However, without a doubt, one of the main attractions of the cathedral is its magnificent cloister (one of the best examples of 14th century Europe), made up of a spectacular pointed series of arches with tracery cut from a different design, as well as beautiful Gothic sculptures.

In its sculptural aspect we must mention its marvellous Mausoleum of the Kings of Navarre (Carlos III the Noble and Leonor de Trastamara), made between 1413 and 1419 in alabaster by the Flemish sculptor Johan Lome de Tournay, where the two monarchs are presented with baldachins on a sepulchral bed, with 28 statues of mourners along its front.

Finally, we must not forget the Diocese Cathedral Museum, which today occupies the rooms of the Refectory and the Cellarer’s Office. Here on display we have sacred works or art from Navarre, especially the set of Marian statues and its fabulous gold and silver religious articles.
