PLACE

Elantxobe (Bizkaia)

If there is a very special and unique place on the Bizkaia coastline, then this has to be Elantxobe, an enchanted village, which is literally hanging over the sea, protected by the Ogoño Cape. It was founded in the 16th Century by the fisherman of the Ibarrangelu Parish Church, and became independent in around 1854 where it formed a part of the Gernika Assemblies, bearing the number 113.

The village is situated along a steep slope, which descends from the top towards the small fishing village. An original and charming little village, with its spectacular views, which have been a source of inspiration for numerous artists and photographers. The whitewashed houses on different levels of the slope make up an array of stairs, narrow streets, small squares and unforgettable corners.

You can actually get to the port by car, and to do so you have to take a turning at the entrance of the village. However, with the risk of getting slightly more tired, we recommend that you start the visit from the top, where the scenery is absolutely spectacular.

Finally, we must not forget the popular “Madalenas” festival, which is held on the 22nd July. This is a very lively event, with people from all over the Basque Country that flock here in boats, cars and buses. Those of you in search of some excitement will find it difficult to forget such a magical day out.
