MONUMENT
Santiago Cathedral (Bilbao)

Situated in the very centre of the Old Town, Santiago Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Bilbao, forming a part of the coastal Route to Santiago. Its construction started in the last quarter of the 14th Century and lasted up to the 15th Century, and therefore evidence of the different stages can be found in its interior, although in total it can be considered a Gothic building.

Inside, we are surprised by the bareness of the cathedral. Although its furniture has been lost, you can still admire some significant works of art such as the neoclassical altarpiece, the statue of the Cristo del Buen Amor or the beautiful Aloitiz Piedad Clasicista, among others.

Likewise, the temple has several objects of value worth mentioning: a beautiful golden silver monstrance with a gold smaller monstrance with 2,300 precious stones diamonds, rubies, diamond chips and emeralds, made by the artisan Mariano Gavín; a golden silver engraved chalice and a chasuble in red lamé, embroidered in pure gold, both a gift from Cardenal Gardoqui; an engraved parish cross, three Gothic censers, three Renaissance censers, all in engraved silver, a gold ciborium and several candlesticks.

With regards to the exterior, as well as the 19th Century Neogothic facade built by Severino Achucarro, there is the vaulted Renaissance portico, built by the stonemasons Garita and Humar in 1581. It suffered a lot of damage from the floods in 1983, but now presents a perfect state of conservation. Today it is catalogued as a Historical Monument.
