| In
the incomparable framework of the bay of La Concha, the first two Sundays
of September, the traditional trawler races take place. It is the most
important sports event in the Basque Country, where 100.000 people gather
in the mountains which surround the bay trying to get a privileged place
which will allow the to see what goes on during the race.
The trawler regattas, as well as other traditional Basque sports, arise
as a result of a certain way of life, in this case that of Basque fishermen.
A long time ago, the boats needed strong rowers who could keep rowing
until they reached the fish, and once the fish were caught, reach the
harbour, in order to make the auction.
With time, the motors substituted the
old rows, but the trawler regattas subsided as a means of competition.
The la Concha regattas are the most popular ones. It is an incomparable
celebration day and the city becomes a boiling point in which nobody wants
to miss the show.
