MONUMENT
Sardine sellers in Santurce (Bizkaia)

If there is something which is deeply linked to Seaside Town of Santurce it is the sardine sellers, dear characters who, bare footed and with a basket on their head, used to do the journey from Santurce to Bilbao carrying their precious merchandise of very fresh sardines well mixed with thick salt.

This tasty fish, which is eaten from June to November, has a privileged place within the Basque gastronomy, Santurce being the cradle of the best of this jewel from the sea. Simply roasted, prepared over hot coal of vine shoot and accompanied by a little bit of salt, they are a tasty morsel at everybody's reach.

In honour of this popular character, which has made this noble town so famous, the "Monument to the fish seller" was made in 1964 by the scuptor from Bilbao Joaquín Lucarini. This statue presides over the town park, dominating the harbour and the river with its perspective.
