MONUMENT
“Memory Walkway” (Bilbao)

The transformation that Bilbao is going through in recent times is known by everybody, making a clear bet in favour of vanguard and culture, making this city an international reference point.

Following this policy of regeneration of the city, the "Memory Walkway" was built in Abandoibarra, an old port area in the industrial period of the city, which is now becoming a reference point of the new Bilbao. To be honest, it was this place that was chosen to build the shocking Guggenheim Museum as well as the Euskalduna Congress Hall.

The amazing sculpture by Santiago Chillida which was placed last February, "Begirari" (The Watchman), which means there are now 4 pieces in the walkway. There are 2 more sculptures which are waiting to be put up: one by Markus Lüpertz and another one by Ulrich Rückriem, both of them German. In fact, the piece by Chillida accompanies the works of Basque artists Angel Garraza and José Zugasti as well as the British William Tucker.

Without a doubt, this is an excellent complement to our visit to the Guggenheim Museum...
