With the arrival of Easter in the Basque Country, many are the religious celebrations which take place. A lot of people take part in this celebration, following the tradition. These are magical moments in which the people of different towns relive the last moments of Christ by representing the different scenes of The Passion.

One must stress the celebrations which take place in towns like Balmaseda, Orduña, Durango or Berango. In Balmaseda they represent a traditional Living Way of the Cross in which the protagonists are the people living in the town. Nowadays, more than 5,000 people take part, some are moved by tradition, and others by religious motives and others by promises made. At the same time, the towns of Durango and Berango are known for its living passions which, like in Balmaseda, have the active participation of the inhabitants who are thrilled by this event.

Orduña, on the other hand, has the best professional procession in Biscay. In this town, the fraternity of the “Sacred School of Christ” organises processions which are recognised in the whole country thanks to its well-taken-care-of preparation and its variety of religious floats and sculptures.
