| Basilica of San Prudencio (Vitoria) |
Being the see of the bishopric until its definitive transfer to Calahorra, the construction of the current Romanesque building is dated at the end of the 12th century, having been later refurnished in the 18th century. This building consists of a nave, transept and a sanctuary with an apse in its ground plan, where the magnificent sculptures which are held in the temple deserve a special mention. These are centered around the full-body human personages, heads, animals, musicians, eating heads, etc. Finally, we cannot talk about the Basilica
of San Prudencio without mentioning the pilgrimage which takes place on
the 28th of April, the day of Saint Prudence (patron of Alava). On this
day, a procession takes the faithful to the temple, where the service
is celebrated and the relic of the saint is kissed. At the same time,
in the fields which surround the basilica, a large crowd gathers and attends
the gastronomy competitions, dances, rural sports, and other festivities
which take place. |
