The Royal Palace of Olite is, without a doubt, the most important testimony left from the old Reign of Navarre. Old residence of the kings of Navarre, when walking through its towers and walls, we will feel the history of this old kingdom which was Navarre. Surrounded by high walls (it takes advantage of the walls which were there in Roman times) and formed by numerous towers and buildings in open spaces, one of its main characteristics is the apparent disorder of its design. This is due to the fact that its construction was never seen as one project, thus the final result was achieved thanks to the enlargement and refurnishing which took place throughout the centuries, although most of the works took place between the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th centuries. |
The group formed by its rooms, gardens and ditches, surrounded by the high walls and topped by the numerous towers, give it a spectacular and magical silhouette. In its times, it was considered as one of the most beautiful in Europe. The oldest part, the Old Palace, was built in the 13th century, and it is now considered a State Hotel, where travellers will be able to stay and enjoy and unforgettable experience with medieval tastel. The Royal Palace of Olite was
declared National Monument in 1925, and refurnished after 1937. It is
one of the most interesting civil gothic collection in Europe and probably
the most emblematic civil building in Navarre. |
