Ekain Cave (Gipuzkoa)

Monument
The Ekain Cave hides one of the most beautiful set of horse paintings in the whole of French-Cantabrian art. It dates back to between 15,000 and 12,000 BC and is considered to be one of the wonders of Parietal paintings.

The settlement is located in Deba, Gipuzkoa, the ideal place for hunting in Magdalenian prehistoric times. The entrance to the cave witnessed the practising of driving hunting. The animals were led with beats to the valley below, where they were captured using nets.

Ekain is the horse cave par excellence, but there are also other paintings of animals such as bears, a deer, bison and a small goat. Some of the prehistoric paintings in the cave are simple black silhouettes; others, in red, are painted with flat colours, both black and ochres. The fine detail of many of the paintings is quite astonishing; for example, the legs of several horses have been carefully preserved and the drawings have been very well done in perspective, showing the legs on one side and the other, crossing or not the back line of the stomach.  It is also quite noteworthy that special care has been given so as not to superimpose one shape over the other, very different to what is normally found in other Paleolithic art. There are a total of 70 figures, 64 paintings and 6 engravings.

The cave is magnificently preserved due to its surrounding microclimate and also because of the Aranzadi Science Society that protects it, and keeps it closed to the general public. Anyone interested in visiting this cave must request it in writing, but given this restriction there is a long waiting list.
