MONUMENT
San Severino in Bamaseda (Bizkaia)

Monument

This Temple is dedicated to St James. San Severino Church was built over the Balmaseda walls in the middle of the 15th century. It is a Gothic temple with three naves on different levels, in which we find a large French like altarpiece and elegant Gothic stained-glass windows in the apse.

San Severino is the most important Church in the town and the only one of the existing four that is open all day to worship.  Of its three chapels, the most important one is Santo Cristo, founded in 1545 by Don Juan de Urrutia, a merchant from Balmaseda. It is considered the jewel of Bizkaian architecture, with an altarpiece of the Stations of the Cross in a plateresque style, with mannerism figures. The Church also contains an Cavaille - Coll organ, manufactured in 1892, which is in a perfect state of conservation, and five medieval tombs.

The walls and tower were reformed in 1730, a time in which several Baroque features were added. These additions altered the exterior profile of the temple, giving it a movement and verticality which it previously lacked
