Founded
in 1327 by María Díaz de Haro (niece of the founder of
Bilbao), Ondarroa is without a doubt a charming seaside town. A walk
around its harbour allows us to enjoy a cosy seaside atmosphere, with
the “arrantzales” (fishermen) dressed in blue in the traditional
way.
Born with a clear fishing vocation, we can see a whale in its shield,
which the people from Ondarroa used to fish in the Basque coast since
the Middle Ages. In fact, a watchman used to look out for whales from
a watchtower and, whenever he saw one, the whole town participated in
fishing it.
Crossed by a river, the town of Ondarroa has an old town which has been
adapted to the peculiar orography of the area. We must stress the Old
Bridge, a very old construction; the Likona Tower, built in the 14th
century where the mother of St. Ignatius was born, or the wonderful
Gothic church of St. Mary, built on the rock itself.
